| Sažetak: | Always looking for new experiences, Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806) could not ignore the medium of pastel, which reached its golden age in the 18th century. This aspect of his work has, up to the present time, been somewhat neglected because of the lack of sufficient uncontested examples attributed to him. However, several engravings and mentions in old auctions prove Fragonard’s interest for this medium. His master, François Boucher probably played a part in this apprenticeship, but also the works of Rosalba Carriera, admired during his passage in Venice in 1761. The late dating of the rare known works by Fragonard in this domain is put into question by the emergence of fourteen unpublished pastels. These are portraits for the illustration of the Histoire de la Maison de Bourbon (History of the House of the Bourbons) by Joseph Louis Ripault-Desormeaux (1772-1788), of which only five were engraved. Why were the other nine not engraved? How did the artist proceed in order to represent the historical figures such as Saint Louis, the Chevalier Bayard, or Blanche de Bourbon? Is this series related to the other famous series of so called fantasy portraits? Questions to which this article, by opening new perspectives into the career of Fragonard the portraitist, attempts to provide answers. |
