Sumari:Globalisation is bringing increasing numbers of patients who speak a foreign language to the couch of analysts who do not share their mother tongue. Experts agree that learning the language of the host country is a cornerstone of a migrant’s integration. In order to gain a better understanding of the psychological reasons for learning a language or rejecting it, the author examines the relationship between languages and the psychological device. Several clinical vignettes from psychotherapeutic and analytical treatments illustrate how language, whether mother tongue or foreign, acts as a messenger of unconscious memory traces in its capacity as a vehicle of relational history. It is this message that analytic treatment seeks to decipher in order to reveal the subject’s history with his or her language(s).
