Riassunto:This article traces trends in research on Southern Europe over recent decades. It draws on the archives of the journal South European Society and Politics and the Standing Group on Southern Europe of the European Consortium for Political Research, presenting relevant quantitative data. Three main thematic phases are identified by the keywords democratisation, Europeanisation and crisis. The article also shows how the shape of Southern Europe was redefined due to Europeanisation and EU Enlargement and then how the geographical focal points of research on the region shifted under the impact of the crisis. Also investigated are patterns of authorship, highlighting the leading role of scholars based in Southern Europe in the production of research on the region.
