Sumario:Black contemporary literature presents stunning female characters created by black female novelists.Indeed, with Zora Neale Hurston, the black woman character becomes non-conformist and complex and ceases to be the tragic mulatto woman or the weak victim usually portrayed in literature.Leading black female novelists, such as Toni Morrison, Paule Marshall and Alice Walker, give a new interpretation of the black American woman’s experience. The new characters they create clearly indicate their independent-mindedness and desire to impose a new vision of their community based on their own liberating experience of life.
