Resumo:“Errors made when speaking French are not mere accidents lying outside the individual. They cast a slur on the whole of his personality and diminish his very being. Errors of language are breaches of duty. To speak French correctly is to increase the value of the individual because this is the language of the master (the colonizer). The latter achieves the state of the perfect man whom one must resemble as much as possible in order to have any chance of being recognized as a member of the human family in one own’s turn”.In such conditions it is not surprising to read the author’s conclusion that “the language of French-speaking African intellectuals belongs to the field of psychiatry” from the moment one considers that it is better to speak correctly without saying anything rather than commit these grammatical mistakes which put one beyond the pale.
