| Sumario: | This article addresses the hospital management of requests for gender reassignment based on semi-structured interviews with a sample of practitioners working in services dedicated to this care. In an invitation to practitioner reflexivity, it reveals the professional epistemology in the face of a social phenomenon that is the subject of intense controversy. Far from a militant approach, the researchers attempt to grasp what the doctors’ discourses about their own practice reveal about references to a professional model that prioritizes the need to consider the environment. The article thus describes how discourses on practices account for the complex combination of professionals, environment, and patients in the management of requests for gender reassignment as a social and professional reality. It focuses on the question of depathologization that arises from this complexity. The process of depathologization relies on various mechanisms: the naming of patients, the porosity of boundaries, and the exogenous nature of causes. The article concludes, on the one hand, with the professional resonance of a broader process of acculturation to gender norms, and on the other hand, with the subtlety of a depathologization that does not lead to a-psychiatrization. |
