| Riassunto: | The history of child abuse provides us with several examples of insightful doctors – Ambroise Tardieu, Henry Kempe, Jenny Aubry, Straus and Manciaux – who in the 19th and 20th centuries described the clinical and diagnostic value of studying the chronology of physical, general and psychological development in relation to the child’s life events. In 1962, in a WHO publication, Mary Ainsworth and Serge Lebovici highlighted the value of this method. Today, the simplified use of observational developmental scales, combined with their continuous graphic representation enabled by computer technology, offers a new tool for clinical analysis. We have called “developmental chronophotography” to pay homage to the invention of chronophotography of movement by Dr. Etienne-Jules Marey in 1888. It offers a new reading of the clinical history of the abused child. This graphic and synthetic reading of the child’s developmental progress is immediately understandable and shareable by all – parents, healthcare professionals, legal professionals and social workers. The first part of the article reviews the historical and scientific foundations of developmental chronophotography. The second part presents emblematic cases illustrate the clinical benefits of this novel tool and its innovative fields of application in everyday medicine, prevention, research and training. |
