Shrnutí:The tragedy of child abuse and neglect affects every aspect of the victims’ personal and social lives of the victims, with immediate, medium-term and long-term consequences for both children and society. The progressive refusal to consider this scourge as inevitable is at the origin of this new cause : the protection of children, less than four centuries ago. In 1642, Saint Vincent de Paul obtained funding from the King and maintenance of abandoned babies to be financed by the King, i.e. the State, thereby from private charity to public charity. This marked the beginning of the institutionalization of Child Protection, which would continue into modern times. In the 19th century against the abuse of children in English factories initiated the children’s rights, since universalized by the CRC. But it took another century for physical, sexual or psychological abuse to be recognized as an endemic calamity to the family. Neglect, which is essentially family-based and too often ignored, are further proof of this. The second half of the 20th century saw the emergence of concern for improving the quality of care in its emotional and psychological dimensions, which has yet to be perfected. Today, we are beginning to address the issue of to prevent the serious consequences of maltreatment on development, physical and mental health in childhood and throughout life. Protecting children remains a real challenge.
