| Περίληψη: | Our duties as psychiatrists in charge of psychiatric liaison in geriatrics lead us to assess the capacity for discernment of elderly patients requesting assisted suicide. The lessons of this activity are of several kinds. First of all, it is useful to have a framework of questions to guide thought. It will also be necessary to inquire about the patient’s life events in order to better distinguish what is a correctable psychic disorder from what is part of the history of the subject. The following will thus appear more clearly: the ambivalent movements of the subject with regard to death, the thorny question of dependency and its close relationship to the subject’s childhood, the theme of respect for dignity, put forward more by relatives and teams echoing the socius than by patients, the astonishing financial question, and finally this climate of urgency to “find a solution” that follows the paralysis of the care undertaken. In our opinion, an evaluation system should be made up of a pair of doctors, and benefit from a supervisory space that allows the emotional charge inherent in this function to be shared. |
