| Gaia: | The Court of Justice of the European Union has imposed itself as a key player to defend the rule of law, in particular in reaction to attacks on the independence of the judiciary in the member states. Since 2018 and its important ruling Juízes Portugueses, the Court has fulfilled this function, first of all at the request of national courts, by way of preliminary rulings and as part of infringement proceedings brought by the Commission, as “guardian of the treaties” in the most worrying cases such as Poland. |
