| Summary: | The geography ofthe May 2024 election confirms that apartheid remains a major key to understand South-African society and its spatial reality. The spatial forms inherited from this multi-secular racial segregation system continue to determine regional inequalities, the evolution of urban spaces and of daily practices without explaining though the spatial reconfigurations caused by the economic and political transformations of the country. After thirty years of democracy, this is a bitter observation for the majority of the population: the worsening of inequalities and the unchanging geography of poverty, driven by the logics of globalisation and metropolisation, have supplanted the attempts to address the injustices arising from the colonial conquest and exacerbated by apartheid. |
