সংক্ষিপ্ত:Since the mid-2010s and the arrival of armed jihadist groups claiming jihad in its territory, Burkina Faso has gradually been plunged into war. Above all, following the outbreak and intensification of the conflict, successive governments have massively encouraged the arming of civilians to supplement the defence and security forces. Based on data collected between 2017 and 2022, this article reviews the genesis of these violent dynamics and analyses how the militarization of power has interacted with the militianisation of society. As in other cases, while the Burkinabe state is generally proving itself to be incapable of protecting villagers, it is playing a central role in arming the conflicts. The co-production of violence by armed men within and at the gates of the State, must therefore be analysed as a public policy and a mode of governance through violence. Finally, these paramilitary mobilisations and their political support produce a collection of discourses and political imaginaries that permeate society and redefine social segments.
