| الملخص: | Mayors must provide leadership, reassurance, innovation, and control expenditure, all while meeting the increasingly high expectations of their constituents. The number of mayors resigning is a clear indication of the difficulties encountered by elected representatives in carrying out their duties. What’s more, despite widespread public distrust of politicians, citizens want to be more involved in the decision-making process of their elected representatives. This article discusses several local initiatives to rebuild democracy, all of which aim to restore meaning to the actions of mayors and combat the disenchantment of citizens with politics. For elected representatives, the decisive criterion appears to be the creation of public value rather than innovation per se, since there is no real evidence of a break with past practices. After analyzing the context of the democratic crisis and presenting the various initiatives in the field of participatory democracy, the results of our study of forty mayors or deputy mayors in charge of local democracy show that elected representatives are not prepared to go beyond local participatory democracy and do not envisage its interpellative form, despite its importance in generating public value. |
