| Sammanfattning: | French public swimming pools are well-known and popular places, and every year they are the scene of several fatal drownings. Malfunctions are identified at bathing surveillance level by judges, but also at organisational level. They highlight public paradoxes surrounding these swimming areas. This contribution, based on the re-use of qualitative data from eighteen years of research, proposes an organisational hypocrisy approach. Several forms of hypocrisy employed by surveillance actors are indeed highlighted and contribute to the maintenance, reinforcement, and even the development of public paradoxes. This longitudinal research thus explains the inertia of the French public swimming pool surveillance system. |
