| סיכום: | The presumption that media are becoming “right-wing” – that is, that they are not simply conveying conservative political discourse critical of a modernity that is supposedly destroying society, but are actually producing such discourse on their own – has been raised more and more in recent years. While the broadcasting industry seemed to be immune to this trend for legal reasons in France, we are now witnessing a phenomenon of capital reorganisation capable of influencing the political stance of radio and television outlets. Based on a content study, this article aims to shed light on the news coverage of the 2022 French presidential election by comparing discourses that varies in genre, format and audience: an evening news program (The “19/45” on M6 channel), a column section of a radio morning show (“En toute subjectivité” on France Inter station) and an infotainment talk show (“Touche pas à mon poste on” C8 channel). We hypothesize that, if there is any “right shift” within the media system, it should be observed at the level of programs which have a significant impact in terms of audience and which are not initially designed specifically to promote the conservatives or reactionaries’ viewpoints. Our results confirm that polarisation and right-wing tendencies in the media can and should be observed in broadcasting at program level, with contrasting patterns appearing from one program to another. This raises questions about the attitudes of media professionals towards democracy and to what extent broadcast media regulation actually meets its objectives. |
