| Riassunto: | Joined under a single flag, the French one, the colonies of French Equatorial Africa and French West Africa became independent nations from 1958 to 1960. Since then, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and Chad, as well as Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Republic of Dahomey (now Benin) Mauritania, Republic of Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso, and Niger have their own emblems (flags but also coats of arms). They helped to provide a visual identity that helped them to establish their position on the international scene and to mark their recently achieved independence. How have these emblematic practices from former colonial powers been adapted in the continent ? Did they allow, do they continue to allow, signifying independence ? |
