| Zusammenfassung: | While the therapeutic virtue of poetry has long been a “topoï”, we thought it more unusual and interesting to show how Hypnos, i.e. Sleep, plays a predominant role, providing the place where this virtue can be exercised. We are helped in our reflection by the sublime scene in Canto xxiii of The Iliad, where Patroclus appears to Achilles, struck down by Sommeil, in a final meeting between the living and the dead that only poetry can stage. In analyzing this text, Henry Corbin’s doctrine of the imaginal world and his familiarity with Sufi poetry in the Middle Ages have been a powerful aid to our task. |
