Gaia:This reflexive article questions the singularity of higher education institutions (HEI) in their relationship to social responsibility and its consequences on the choice of tools for its deployment. The article sheds original light on this issue, based on the study of the influence of institutional norms of science (R. Merton's ethos and T. Kuhn's paradigm) and complemented by the insights of the convention theory. Finally, the article discusses the limits of this singularity effect on the deployment of Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility (SDSR), using the same theoretical framework. This analysis shows that institutional norms can lead to operational singularity in HEIs, making the implementation of SDSR more complex due to potential conflicts with traditional academic values and practices. It also shows that tools specific to HEIs can limit this difficulty, provided they remain consistent with generic SDSR tools.
