Gaia:This paper studies the conditions for the success of startups. In a first part, and in support of a literature review, we address both subjective and objective dimensions of success linked on the one hand to the startup itself and on the other hand to the entrepreneur who created the startup. This is based both on literature and on a qualitative study of 28 entrepreneurs working in the French’s startup ecosystem. The social and societal utility of the projects carried out by startups must undoubtedly be better taken into account by investors. In a second part, the prior elements having an effect on entrepreneurial success are explored. These are broken down into three categories: those related to the profile of the entrepreneur, those related to the environment of the startup and finally those associated with the profile of the startup. A quantitative study of 114 creators of startups then makes it possible to show an impact of age, level of education and previous entrepreneurial experience on the success of the startup, but no gender effect. Some of the Big Five personality traits on entrepreneurial success are partially confirmed. Thus, a high level of Extraversion and Openness, as well as a low level of Neuroticism, favor the entrepreneurial success of the startup. In addition, “lead users” have more entrepreneurial success than others. However, there is no typical profile of the successful entrepreneur. In addition, the social support of the entourage plays a strong role in entrepreneurial success. Finally, startups with less access to financing (fundraising, loans, grants, etc.) are less successful.
