Starting from two statements made in the TTP, God “founded the Israelite people (or nation)” (III-7), and “transferred to God all their natural power” (XVII-7), we seek to show how the belief in the revelation of the election plays as a mode of production religion of the political laws constituting the Hebrew people. It will be a question of examining the four moments of the text during which Spinoza deals with this question, to distinguish them by seeking to understand how the position of a sacred and that of the augurs or prophecies are determining conditions of the transformation of the israelitica people in republicahebræorum. The question is whether the “genial” introduction of religion into the state by Moses reduces it to an instrument of domination or allows to think of it as an irreducible instance of politics. The challenge is also to measure the price of a political constitution subject to fortuna, that is to say, to understand how a rule unifying at one time turns to its opposite.Cairn free access
