The 19th century gives rise to a new hermeneutics, exemplified, according to Carlo Ginzburg, by Freud, Morelli, and Conan-Doyle; Poe’s story however shows the emergence of another model, where, since any thing is already an interpretation, what counts is what is done to and with it.
