| Summary: | In Mandarin, subordinators play an essential role in complex sentences with subordinate clauses, especially in complex sentences where the subordinate predicate serves a circumstantial function. The present communication aims to study the paradigm of subordinators in modern Mandarin from the perspective of André Martinet’s functionalist linguistics. This specific class of connectors will be distinguished based on its syntactic behavior. From a morphological perspective, we will subdivide subordinators into two types according to their composition: morphemes and unit complexes. Subsequently, we will examine some common subordinators by analyzing their semantic values, the types of predicates they are associated with, and their positions within the clause. This study provides a comprehensive description of subordinate connectors in Mandarin, addressing a gap in the research on modern Mandarin syntax. |
