| Gaia: | This article explores the use of metonymic shortcuts through a comparative analysis between Mandarin Chinese, French and English with the aim of showing significant differences and potential similarities between the three languages. It presents a detailed analysis of some typical types of metonymic relations, including animal-for-meat of animal, material-for-product, place-for-product made there, or writer-for-his work meaning extensions etc., as well as more marginal phenomena, such as antonomasia, thought of as a specific kind of metonymy (proper name-for-common noun or vice versa). The findings in this article lead to the conclusion that the Mandarin Chinese does allow metonymies to occur, but to a lesser extent than languages such as French or English and displays a strong tendency to resort to a « compromise » solution. |
