| Resumo: | In his preface to Languages in Contact by Uriel Weinreich, André Martinet questions the assumption of self contained and homogenous linguistic communities. He stresses the fact that it has been a useful hypothesis, and feels that linguists will always have to revert to it at times. The present study aims at discussing the problems involved in and connected with coexistence of two sets of assumptions, and studying the implications of such a coexistence. Obviously, the most important implication here is a multi-scale approach to language description. This study also points to some parallel evolutions in physical sciences. |
