| Sumari: | After replacing language and the interest for languages in André Martinet’s biography, we discuss his preference for the expression « language in contact » rather than « bilingualism », as well as his commitment, along with the Association for a Bilingual World, to creating a trilingual Europe. We attempt to depict in what way the linguistic world has changed by mentioning the impact of institutional definitions of languages, the speed with which urban areas are recomposed, the frailty of relationships between languages in situations traditionally described as diglossia. Our conclusion insists on the need to take new social features, particularly those connected to a widespread plurilingualism and pluriculturalism into account. As Martinet pointed out, a language community is never homogenous and closed. |
