| Итог: | Galician is the language spoken by the majority of the population in Galicia. It is spoken by almost two and a half million people, out of a total of 2 800 000 inhabitants. In the early twentieth century, 90 % of the population spoke only Galician ; even at that time it was considered as a low prestige language. Today, 93 % of the population can speak Galician. The increasing use of the language in fields such as education, administration, the media, etc., has made it possible to overcome the traditional view of Galician as a subsidiary language. Galician, like all romanic languages and dialects, derives from Vulgar Latin, namely the Latin spoken in the late imperial age, in so-called Romania, which in the Middle Ages extended beyond the present day area covered by Romance Languages. Compared to these other languages, Galician has had a conservative evolution from Latin, as a result of its peripheral position in the Romania. |
