| الملخص: | Faced with an unfamiliar linguistic construction (Gerund) relating a familiar event, 50 children aged 4 to 8 are asked to perform a metalinguistic task, i.e. to talk about either a similar (SE) or a different event (DE). We suppose a) that older children, when talking about SE and DE, will choose to paraphrase the experimenter’s utterance, whereas younger ones will repeat it (Developmental hypothesis), and b) that SE contents will favour production of identical forms in contrast to DE which will give rise to linguistic variation (Semantic hypothesis). Results tended to confirm the first hypothesis, showing a developmental trend from repetitions to paraphrases. According to the Semantic hypothesis, when relating an SE, children tended to produce repetitions of the lingustic model (Gerund), even at the age of 7-8 ; in contrast, for DE, children tried to produce variations of the linguistic model, resulting sometimes in syntactically erroneous utterances. Discussion bears on the way children approach the relation between form and content at a metalinguistic level. |
