Shrnutí:In early language acquisition, adults offer many new words and constructions. Children take up these offers. To signal that they have noticed new words, they often repeat them, either on their own (singleword utterances) or incorporated into their next utterance. This paper explores some specific functions of repetition in acquisition – for adults, drawing attention to new forms, for children signalling they have noticed something, and adding information to common ground. These functions are important in maintaining the dialogue in adult-child exchanges.
