Opis
Sažetak:RéSUMé This study has two different goals, one being descriptive, the other theoretical. To begin with, we present the main acoustical features of all the allophones of the vowels of French from Quebec. Twelve students (six male, six female) attending Laval University in Quebec city served as informants. Our corpus contains nearly 2,000 vowels, taken from all environments of the speech chain. For this purpose, 159 different words were used. The properties closely scrutinised are length, and the value of the first two formants. Then, on a theoretical level, we attempt to show precisely how it is useful and even necessary to carry out such an analysis in order to better understand the structural forces at hand in a phonological system.
