Beskrivelse
Summary:Sentence intonation in Romance : the French exception Intonation is used to indicate, among other things, the declarative or interrogative modality of the sentence. Speakers also use intonation to give the listener some indications about the syntax of the sentence being spoken by marking stressed and final syllables by specific melodic contours, which define a prosodic structure not necessarily congruent to syntax. By analyzing intonation of sentences of increasing syntactic complexity, it is possible to reveal the prosodic grammar underlying this structure, as well as the prosodic units involved. In this framework, we present here some experimental results showing that the phonological description of Italian, Spanish and Portuguese sentence intonation is similar, whereas French presents a distinct prosodic grammar.
