| Resumo: | This article is a theoretical reflection on the different forms of alienation in Togo, through a transdisciplinary and complementary analysis. Based on the discussions at the May 2023 conference at the University of Lomé, we examine how alienation, under various psychic, social and cultural interlocking factors, manifests itself as a singular psychic adaptation in the Togolese context, in response to the aggressive confrontation with otherness. We propose two lines of analysis: the first deals with the ‘normal’ side of alienation, necessary to benefit from a place in a hierarchical multi-subjective whole and to fit into a traditional-modern culture. The second explores the ‘pathological’ side embodied in the cultural imagination of witchcraft where the strangeness of the other penetrates the subject. Through this continuum, we highlight the intracultural tensions that currently arise in the tradimodern complex between heteronomous affiliation to traditions and the autonomous emancipation of modernism. Finally, the intercultural alienation relationships between colonial heritage and contemporary coloniality are discussed. |
