Resumo:The aim of this article is to illustrate the complexity of identity negotiation among children of migrants caught up between two cultural affiliations. The case presented here concerns a young girl of Tamil origin who was seen in transcultural consultation in Avicenne hospital, Bobigny (Paris area) for the follow-up of an manic delusional episode that occurred on the occasion of the traditional rite of passage at the time of the first menstruation for young girls. The case illustrates the interweaving of issues around puberty and a complicated family history characterised by the existence of psychic trauma. This girl’s illness undermines the importance of the ethno-psychiatric concept of cultural blending and the therapeutic action of the transcultural system, putting greater emphasis on the identity dimension, with a creative loop linking complementary systems of belonging.
