| Zusammenfassung: | Improving access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) enhances the security of populations, with positive effects at both the microeconomic level (fight against poverty and improvement in the living conditions of populations) and the macroeconomic level (effect of investment on employment). This article proposes a holistic approach to the impacts of the WASH sector on “human security”, highlighting the concept of “WASH security”. This concept is first explained with regard to the evolution of the international framework of the United Nations. Barriers to innovation and investment in the WASH sector are then analyzed in light of the literature and studies conducted in sub-Saharan Africa, leading to questions about the methods used to evaluate WASH projects. Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) shows the value of investing in the WASH sector by taking into account “unperceived” externalities (health, education, environmental, etc.) that are often underestimated in financial analysis (FA) or cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA).
