| Summary: | This article reports on the process of tariff reform undertaken by the concessionaire of the Neste hydraulic system (south-west France), taking into account the water resource evolution, while guaranteeing its fair share and long-term cost coverage by the beneficiaries. The process was supported by a team of researchers, and involved the stakeholders, in particular the water users. This innovative procedure enabled the principles on which the reform was to be based to be identified collectively, and the pricing methods to be discussed. However, the political weight of elected agricultural representatives who did not reflect the diversity of irrigated farmers severely curtailed the initial ambitions, resulting in an imperfect tariff reform. A critical analysis of the process does, however, enable us to identify the factors to be taken into account when drawing up tariff reforms, and questions the role of researchers in this type of innovation.
