Özet:After the 1954 Orleansville earthquake, Jean de Maisonseul, a friend of Le corbusier and director of the Algiers Department of Town Planning, put together a dynamic team from the Algiers planning agency directed then by Dalloz and Hanning, and determined to establish a « new » city. Attractive pieces of architecture were erected to replace the ruins of the city: The commercial centre Saint Reparatus by Jean Bossu, the Mosque by Robert Hansberger, the Youth and Sport Centre by Louis Miquel and Roland Simounet which will later become the Albert camus Centre during its opening on the 4th April 1961. Renamed Larbi Tebessi, this cultural centre has resisted the terrible 1980 earth quake hence demonstrating a construction that resisted nature, time and humans. This architectural compound conceived and built between 1955 and 1960 in the midst of the algerian war testifies of the sincerity and generosity of its humanistic creators who were attached to the land that saw their birth. Today, a centre for youth and sports, though threatened by human indifference, there is hope for an attentive renovation of this remarkable architecture.
