Samenvatting:The first few months of the year 1747 were one of the most troubled times in the whole history of Rouergue during the 18th century. Against a backdrop of soaring grain prices, the combined specters of a famine and a protestant plot sparked at least thirteen different riots aiming at blocking grain exports. By far the largest share of these mass protests took place along the pathways and in the villages and towns of the upper Aveyron valley. The Rouergue lieutenance de la maréchaussée, the regional rural police force, ended up being the institution most involved in quashing the unrest and restoring the authority of the Royal state. Half of its brigades saw action in a number of policing expeditions, while the prévôt général, the officer in charge of this institution, who was ordinarily posted in Montauban, remained almost a whole month in the area. The present paper analyzes the ways in which the lieutenance dealt with this severe subsistence crisis, through strategies both punitive (hunting suspects, arrests, trials) and preventative (escorts for grain merchants, presence in markets).
