Yhteenveto:Locus of control is an important determinant of individual health practices. It relates to the influence an individual attributes to the events they encounter in the course of their life. An individual with an internal locus of health will consider that events are the result of their own behaviors. Conversely, an individual with an external locus will attribute the causes of events to external reasons beyond their control. According to the literature, locus of control tends to remain stable with advancing age, or to decrease slightly. Gender also has an effect on locus of control. Women tend to be more external than men. The present research aims to study gender-specific motivations to participate in a preventive health workshop on a representative sample of 2,397 young retirees in France. Collectively, our results confirm the influence of an internal locus of control, and related concepts such as self-efficacy and the values attached to one’s health, on prevention. These motivations vary between men and women. Our results suggest that these motivations should be taken into account in prevention programs.
