Description
Résumé:Drawing on qualitative research addressing distress in advanced age (Malâge), this article aims to examine the reconfigurations of care that punctuate the aging process. While the concept is mainly used to analyze the work of those who provide care, focusing on the narratives of older individuals at a time when they become care recipients allows us to explore the other side of care relationships. Through 30 interviews with older people aged 71 to 99, it became apparent that the feeling of distress was largely linked to shifts in life paths, particularly in relation to the meaning of and role within care relationships. With aging, professional activities disappear, health problems increase, and loved ones can become distant. The abilities of older individuals are scrutinized by their loved ones and professionals to assess their autonomy and their ability to look after themselves and their environment. We will analyze how these experiences are influenced by gender categories (man/woman, relations to femininity/masculinity, and conjugality), social class, and place of residence, which provide more or fewer resources to face these changes.
