| Sumario: | The health context linked to the COVID-19 pandemic revealed to the general public that some older people died as a result of isolation and a lack of support, particularly in nursing homes (EHPAD in France). The concept of slipping syndrome was used unprecedentedly in the media. Based on the concept of hospitalism, we draw a parallel with the isolated older adult in an institution who, despite the care provided, may go so far as to give up on life. Through the case of Mrs J., a resident of an EHPAD in a Public Mental Health Establishment (EPSM), we analyze how a hypothesis of slipping syndrome enables a team to take a fresh look through the support of several people and thus produce docking effects. However, the conditions in which they work do not give professionals the opportunity to invest in “taking care.” An ethic of care based on collegiality and recognition of our vulnerabilities would be a necessary compass for supporting older adults and preventing these syndromes. This is a social issue that requires a real political commitment. |
