Riassunto:Despite extensive research on municipal sports policies, few studies have focused on départemental (county) and regional policies, and even fewer have examined the allocation of subsidies to (semi) professional clubs. The current paper addresses this gap in the literature by exploring the “logics” underlying départemental and regional councils’ decisions to subsidize elite sport organizations. Applying a multidisciplinary theoretical framework, combining economics, public management, and sociology, we combined a breakdown of financial data provided by the regulatory bodies of six (semi)professional leagues with analyses of interviews with representatives of five départemental and regional councils. Comparing these quantitative and qualitative data enabled us to identify the logics underlying subsidy allocation decisions and the tensions between the economic, sporting, and political considerations that guide French local authorities' support for (semi) professional clubs.
