Shrnutí:The author questions the repeated quest, in culture and in psychoanalysis, for a definition of the essence of the Masculine, while clinical practice demonstrates the extraordinary variety of its modalities both in history and on the various continents. This quest is all the more astonishing since Freud himself affirmed and explained its impossibility. He concludes with the clinical misinterpretation that consists of helping the subject to identify and take note of his singularity while offering him a “psychoanalytic” ideal of masculinity.
