সংক্ষিপ্ত:By analyzing the journal published by the Société générale d’éducation et d’enseignement (SGEE), the main association defending the interests of private education between 1880 and 1914, this article examines the way in which Catholic educators positioned themselves in relation to the reform of the school system initiated by the Third Republic. Initially very scornful of the new girls’ lycées and laudatory of the instruction given to upper-class girls by nuns with few qualifications in free schools, the Bulletin de la SGEE ended up promoting a far-reaching reform of Catholic female secondary education. The law of 1904, which withdrew the right to teach from members of religious congregations, prompted public schools to secularize and reposition themselves in the education system, fulfilling what Mother Marie du Sacré-Cœur had called for in 1898, at the time sparking controversy. Against all expectations, the Belle Époque was a time when Catholic women activists spoke out within the SGEE, where women’s voices had previously been underrepresented.
