| סיכום: | Bloy and Huysmans, whose work echoes the preparations for and aftermath of the Separation Act, share many similarities: the same detestation of the anticlerical republic, the same ferocity towards the Catholic world accused of having allowed itself to be won over by the material spirit of the times, the same providentialist interpretation of the event as a punishment carried out by a diabolical instrument for the purpose of regeneration. But the two writers also diverge on several points. Bloy presented himself as a theocrat, defending the sovereignty of the Pope; Huysmans professed anti-Roman ideas and aspired to reform the Church. Bloy proposed a mystical, sacrificial and apocalyptic reading of the event, while Huysmans tried to realistically define the conditions that would, in his opinion, enable the Church to be rescued from a mortal sclerosis and to make the Gospel message better heard in a secularised society. |
