| Gaia: | This article focuses on tenant movements in Berlin in the 2010s. Drawing on materials collected during a multi-site ethnographic survey and interviews combined with statistical analysis of institutional data, it discusses the forms of appropriation of the city that fuel these mobilisations. Firstly, the analyses reveal both the material and symbolic processes that have led different social groups, particularly from relatively heterogeneous waves of immigration, to develop an attachment to Berlin as a “city of tenants”. For activists, this attachment to affordable rental housing is coupled with particular ways of understanding civic participation that have developed through the social movements that arose in the particular conditions of the Cold War, and then of reunification. We conclude by considering how differing and unequal forms of appropriation of these representations of the city coexist, shaped by the trajectories and social characteristics of individuals. |
