| Shrnutí: | Now high on the political agenda, the principle of land sobriety invites urban fabric stakeholders to reexamine their practices and question the methods of urban densification. In this article, we propose to discuss this paradigm shift through the prism of productive activities. Often forgotten and yet essential, productive activities are among the urban functions that are least able to resist the mechanisms of neoliberal urban planning. Through the case of the city of Mons (Belgium), we document the urban consequences of the urban upgrade process undertaken since the beginning of the 21st century. Productive spaces appear to be spaces that can be utilised by public and private stakeholders whose operations are motivated by the challenges of densification and urban diversity. Based on these observations, the productive function— previously defined by its vulnerability—now seems to us to offer an opportunity to rethink its role in urban development from a land-sobriety perspective. |
