Opis
Izvleček:This article analyses tourism practices that have become globalised (through technological and social acceleration) as a consumer culture. They are structured around market offerings that disseminate images and symbols. Different subcultures emerge from this consumer culture. They are built on specific values which are translated into practices and a relation to space that are specific to the places visited. Drawing upon an international ethnographic study conducted in luxury stores, and semi-structured interviews with tourists, we identify four subcultures of tourist consumption that are interconnected around a semiotic square built on the relation of opposition between “over there” (the places visited) and “at home” (the country of origin). From our findings, we identify complementarities and contradictions between these subcultures that go beyond the traditional binaries distinguishing tourists and residents.
