The subject of death, unspeakable by itself, fundamentally questions our relationship with language and our ability to speak. Indeed, it is striking to note that, despite its unfathomable nature, human communities never cease to produce discourse on the subject. Here, we will focus on literary texts and how they mobilize the subject of death: How does literature approach the subject of death and dying? What are the functions of such narratives? What are we really talking about? We attempt to sketch out a philosophical path through literary works that seem to work, through fiction, on what dying evokes.
