Resumo:Neglect can have a dramatic impact on a child’s behaviour and development. The reversibility of this impact depends on how early neglect is identified and addressed. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a reliable and easy -t‑use tool screening for children’s behavioural and developmental disorders associated with neglect. The N-FIDI scale was used to screen children aged from 0 to 30 months and their parents (83 neglected children and their 50 parents and 75 non-neglected children and their 46 parents). These children were split into two groups, one compromising neglected children and the other non-neglected children. Only the items differed between the groups were retained for the final version of the N-FIDI scale. Principal component analysis (PCA) explored the structure of the scale, while its internal consistency was assessed by calculating Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The final N-FIDI scale consisted of 44 items covering 4 areas: 1) Child behaviour, 2) child professional interactions, 3) child-parent interactions, and 4) parent behaviour. In this article we will discuss all the items used for the N-FIDI scale and in particular those which proved to be very significant: “bodily disorders” and “disorders of emotional expression behaviour”. We will more particularly describe compulsivity, a little-recognized emotional behaviour disorder but particularly common in the population of neglected children that we studied.
