Zusammenfassung:The meaning of this ghosts’ story is only revealed if their apparition is understood not as a punishment but as an urge to moral reform and if the final catastrophe is seen as resulting from the refusal to take the latter into account. A close analysis of the text, through the prism of theological, psychiatric and literary sources, shows that what is at stake, in the fate of the beggar reiterating the walk towards death, is the incarnation that is typical of this kind of narratives, that is to say the divine voice of conscience. Thus, in line with romantic poetology, the inside becomes the outside and the invisible makes itself visible.
