| Sumari: | In the summer of 1918, the Council of Flanders worked on a major exhibition that would take place in Germany later that year. This contribution examines the exhibition as a cultural-political intervention – a form of cultural diplomacy – intended to influence transnational relations between Germany and Flanders. It shows how the exhibition carefully constructed an image of Flanders: historically rooted, culturally thriving and ready for political independence, and that the activist cultural policy was less conservative than is often assumed. Apart from folklore and tradition, there was also room in this national narrative for modernist work by young innovators such as Paul van Ostaijen, Floris Jespers and Paul Joostens. This study thus sheds new light on the strategic deployment of art and literature in a turbulent political context at the end of the First World War.
